The Panjshir Valley — meaning 'Five Lions' — is one of Afghanistan's most iconic landscapes. The Panjshir River runs turquoise through a narrow gorge flanked by towering mountains that hold snow year-round. The valley is renowned for its warm and proud people, its emerald mines, and its extraordinary natural beauty. At the top of the valley, the Anjuman Pass opens onto a high plateau with views that stretch into Badakhshan. The tomb of Ahmad Shah Massoud, carved into the mountainside above the river, is a place of deep national significance.
