The Masjid-i-Jami of Herat, also known as the Friday Mosque, is one of the oldest and most magnificent mosques in Afghanistan. Originally built in the 12th century and expanded under the Timurids, its courtyard is lined with some of the most exquisite Mosaic tilework in existence — deep cobalt blue, turquoise, and gold geometric patterns stretching across every surface. The mosque is still active today, and the sound of the call to prayer echoing across its vast courtyard at dusk is deeply moving.
