About This Attraction
Carved into the sandstone cliffs of Bamiyan in the 6th century AD, the two giant Buddha statues were among the most remarkable examples of Gandharan art in the world. Though the statues were destroyed in 2001, the towering niches that held them remain — monuments to the region's layered history as a crossroads of Buddhism, Islam, and the ancient Silk Road. Visitors can climb inside the cliff network via ancient staircases and explore caves that once housed thousands of monks.
